Problem or Opportunity


Recently, while visiting a local Laundromat, (my washing machine died over a weekend) I spotted a notice on the wall that said:-

“If you need change for the washing or drying machines come next door. We are happy to help!”

My first reaction was “Wow”! What a different approach. Most businesses next to coin operated outlets of any kind actively discourage supplying change because of the perceived nuisance value.

Yet we all know perception can be misleading sometimes and all it takes is someone to see things differently.

The business next door was a retail outlet for electrical goods. TV’s, Stereo Systems, Computers and Washing/Drying Machines.

And the counter for change was at the back of the store with a clear sign leading to it that said;

“Change supplied and come back and browse while your washing/drying is being done!”

Now they have solved two issues for the Laundromat customers – extra coins for the machines AND what to do other than stare mindlessly at clothes going round in a tumble dryer.

Do you think they just might sell the occasional piece of electrical goods? Well I asked the proprietor who confirmed that this led to nearly 10% of their business. All because an innovative proprietor saw an opportunity where others saw a nuisance.

Only suggestion I could make was to install a cappuccino maker!
