How Good is your Guarantee?

I recently returned a phone message 4 days after it was left – a little longer than I normally would – and the response when I apologized for taking so long stopped me in my tracks.

He said, “No problem Geoff, I knew you would because you guarantee it”!

My reason for taking so long is that I was catching up on numerous messages after my return from a speaking trip to South Africa. Yet he didn’t know that. He was just quietly assured that I would… because I always did.

And it caused me to ponder the nature of people’s guarantees.

Consider this! You make an appointment to see someone about a week out. It is a definite appointment – time and place locked into both diaries. Yet many people will call and check before turning up for the appointment in case the other party has had to change.

What ever happened to personal responsibility?

If I make an appointment and then need to change it, isn’t it my responsibility to phone you and ask can we change?

Shouldn’t you be able to rely on my guarantee that if I made an agreement to see you at a certain time and location, I will be there?

Now some would argue that agreeing to an appointment is not a guarantee! And I would ask, “then what is it?”.

How much better off we would all be, if when someone said they would be there, they were, without us having to check? So how good is your guarantee?
