Every Wednesday morning I attend my networking group for their 7am breakfast. I arrive at 6.20 am, park my car, and as I walk to the venue I stop at the same outdoor café for a cappuccino.
Having originally introduced myself to the staff member – Dave - who always serves me and complimented him on the quality of his cappuccino (we have all had bad ones) we now have a connection.
Imagine my delight now (after just 2 weeks) when Dave begins making my coffee as soon as he sees me approaching – it is almost ready when I get there. And then he calls out to me telling me to sit down and he will bring it to me even though it is “counter service”.
Who benefits here and what is the lesson?
Well, we both benefit. We both feel special. We are both acknowledged by each other. My day is definitely brighter and I imagine so is Dave’s by the smile on his face when he serves me. Furthermore, and of more practical value, we both would be far more disposed to help each other given the opportunity.
It doesn’t take much to acknowledge people and make a difference in their day. Look for a name badge and use someone’s name when you speak to them. Look for something to compliment them on. Make a point of acknowledging someone every day!
